5 SUST Ex-Students Taken to Jalalabad Police Station

Police have arrested five former students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) and reached Sylhet. They were taken into the custody of the Jalalabad police station on Tuesday (January 25) afternoon.

Confirming the matter, Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner Nisharul Arif said the detainees were brought to Sylhet at 5 pm. These 5 people will be interrogated in the custody of the Jalalabad police station. Preparations are being made to file a case against them.

Earlier, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested them. They were later handed over to Sylhet police.

The arrested are Habibur Rahman Khan, 26, son of Matiar Rahman Khan of Sakhipur Daripaka village in Tangail district, Reza Nur Mueen, 31, son of Muin Uddin of Laxmikola village under Shibganj police station of Bogra district, AFM Nazmul Sakib, 32, son of Mizanur Rahman of Sonadanga in Khulna district,  AKM Maruf Hossain, 27, son of AKM Mosharraf of 17/3 house in Jabbar Housing B-block of Mazar Road and Faisal Ahmed, 27, son of Sadiqul Islam of Niamatpur village under Muradnagar police station of Cumilla district.

Family and friends of the detainees alleged that they had been detained for providing financial support to the student protests of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology. The five former students were picked up by law enforcement from different areas of the capital.

Shah Razi Siddique, a former student of SUST, told the media that Habibur Rahman is my roommate for the last two and a half years. He was picked up by CID personnel from Sector 6 of Uttara last night.

He also said Habib's family's financial situation was not good. His parents live in Tangail. Yesterday Habib got a visa to go to Germany. Hae got a job in a software company there. Reza's child, on the other hand, is very young.

Meanwhile, CID's Additional Superintendent of Police Azad Rahman told the media that the CID had not made any arrests.
